Eithne listened to the whirr of the wheelchair ramp. It amazed her how the driver, Tony, could deploy it with the press of a button from inside the bus. She liked Tony. He chatted as he drove. She didn’t like Billy who covered Tony’s day off. He was obnoxious. She said it out loud one day by accident. She meant to say, ‘thank you’ but instead she said, ‘you’re a jerk’. Mortifying! She never used bad language and always chastised her Bobby if he did. That had gotten her in a bit of trouble. The doctor changed her meds. Billy refused to take her on the bus until she apologised. Matron made her apologise. Then again, she was a jerk too. Eithne giggled.
