Scrimshaw

Scrimshaw by JB Rockwell

On the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year of a blighted marriage, Captain Honorus Bedford-Haversham set sail for the Sandwich Islands, leaving Nantucket and his goodwife to autumn’s clutch. From her Widow’s Walk, Persimmon bore witness to that departure and the midnight selkie glowing golden on the Ebony Reach’s prow, and plotted out her husband’s murder.

For the bairn in her belly and the others in the back garden—buried there beneath the peach trees and rhododendrons. Six carved headstones placed in an orderly row. Six wee babes drowned with nary a breath drawn between them.
