At the end of the pier, Madam Leona shivers. An east wind slinks and yowls around her booth, sets the strings of coloured lightbulbs swaying, picks up chip papers, makes revenants of them, stirs the gulls into ravenous action that just as quickly evaporates into squawking, resentful disappointment.
