A Strange Semaphore

A Strange Semaphore by Matt Thompson

A gathering on the shoreline.

Swathed in orange plastic, the men huddle around an oily campfire. They hold their palms to the flames in the acrid breeze that blows along the beach. Sea-wrack they are, ambergris, drifting in from faraway lands. Every day more come; staggering from the foamy brine, their lungs as still as twilight air in the moments before a lightning strike.
