Guest Editor Elle Brown

Seaside Gothic Issue 7 will be edited by Elle Brown, a writer and editor with a background in nonfiction writing and poetry. She joined Seaside Gothic as an Editorial Assistant from Issue 5 and was heavily involved in the editing process for Issue 6.

With an undergraduate degree in English Literature and an MA in Literature and Cultures, Elle Brown has spent several years dissecting gothic texts with a focus on seaside literature, both contemporary and classics. For her Master’s Degree she explored writing from well before the modern Gothic period, but still examined humanity’s relationship with the sea and how it is recorded through writing.

Elle Brown has written for Society19, with 51 published articles, and has poetry published The Cannon’s Mouth, The Projectionist’s Playground, Foxtrot Uniform, and Runcible Spoon. She has been part of the Bourneville Book Festival. She was drawn to Seaside Gothic through being an avid student of the gothic genre, and the psychological maelström that is the fatal pull of the sea.

It’s the place where you’re closest to the horizon, so flat and infinite, like you’re standing on the edge of the world. There’s no hiding from anything there.

Elle Brown, The Empty Lido

The writing Elle Brown enjoys tends to be from lesser-heard perspectives which explore the draw of the water and its feminine presence. She favours work which challenges but also presents itself in refreshing ways whilst acknowledging the long history of seaside gothic literature.
