The rugged coast of North Devon is beguiling at any time, but in the early morning when the mist is still caressing the sea it is otherworldly. Salt coats my lips as I sit on the shore and my eyes tear as I stare across the dark water. As a lone seagull cries into the bitter wind on the clifftop I am seduced by the briefest of glimpses of the tiny island with a population of just twenty-seven that has played such a significant role in the creation of the region’s lore.
This is the real life story of pirate kings, treachery, slaves and court-ordered pirate hunters all set over eighteen brutal days in 1610.
